One of the simplest methods to maintain clear youthful skin is to prevent any type of skin damage. It's simple—moisturize day and night, never ever pop zits, use sunscreen, get plenty of rest—the list is infinite. But what if one of the best, most effective ways to restore a youthful complexion involves purposefully pricking your skin? Would you be willing to try microneedling?

This skin treatment method involves rolling tiny needles across the skin to create the tiniest punctures that will help kickstart the skin’s healing process. Microneedling’s simpler version, called derma rolling, is something you can do at home following some simple steps.

What Are The Benefits Of Derma Rolling?

What Are The Benefits Of Derma Rolling?

Derma Rolling is a form of skin rejuvenation treatment that is quickly becoming the go-to option for those who are struggling with some common skin issues and looking to improve the look and feel of their skin.

What is microneedling?

DEFINITION

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, uses hundreds of microneedles to create miniscule wounds on the first layer of skin to trigger the wound healing process.

Derma rolling banks on the body’s natural healing process to improve the skin. When you get wounded, the skin usually begins to heal in seconds. Using a derma roller on your skin creates small wounds that signal the body to initiate a process essential for repair, similar to the natural healing process. The structural proteins collagen and elastin are utilized during this process, which are responsible for the anti-aging effects of microneedling.

The tiny punctures created by the needles also serve as pathways in the skin, enabling topical treatments such as serums to be absorbed more efficiently. Microneedling can be used to fade acne scars, smooth out wrinkles, reduce and diminish hyperpigmentation, and minimize enlarged pores.

What Is The Difference Between Microneedling And Derma Rolling?

What Is The Difference Between Microneedling And Derma Rolling?

Microneedling and derma rolling are similar procedures. Both involve using a roller containing fine needles to cause microscopic damage to the skin. The main difference between the two is that microneedling uses a device called an electrical derma pen that creates tiny punctures to the skin, while derma rolling only uses the roller. The electric derma pen is able to penetrate deeper than the roller and can also be used to deliver topical treatments deeper into the skin.

How To Use A Derma Roller At Home? Is It Safe?

Microneedling was once only available as an in-clinic procedure. To get the most out of it and to avoid any negative reactions, strictly follow the instructions provided with your at-home derma roller or ask a skincare expert for advice. Here's a quick reference for most derma rolling tools.

  1. Cleanse your face and dry thoroughly before the treatment. Apply your preferred serum.
  2. Hold your derma roller and start rolling vertically, up and down the cheeks, forehead, and chin. Do horizontal next and then diagonal.
  3. Apply another layer of serum after using the roller.
  4. Spray the roller with 70 percent isopropyl alcohol before storage

A derma rolling treatment plan should be in tune with the body’s healing process. It is recommended to have a treatment period of five consecutive days followed by a pause of equal length. This gives the skin enough time to rest and recover. Once the skin has recovered, continue with a new cycle. Follow this schedule – five days of treatment and five days of rest – for two months. Consider replacing your derma roller once every three months.

How long should you wait for the results? Compare your derma roller before and after photos in a month. For adult skin, any new treatment should take effect in a span of 30 to 40 days. This is about the same amount of time it takes for complete skin cell turnover. Experience Immediate effects in as early as two weeks - notice a softer, smoother complexion that responds better to skincare.

Expect a few minor side effects after treatments - a little redness and slight irritation. These usually go away on their own within a few days. To prevent adverse effects such as infection, clean and disinfect your tool after every use and replace it if you must.
