What is LED Light Therapy?

LED light therapy is a cutting-edge skincare treatment that harnesses the power of specific light wavelengths to address a range of skin concerns. This non-invasive approach uses LED (Light Emitting Diode) devices to deliver targeted light energy deep into the skin's layers. Each wavelength has a unique purpose, from combating acne-causing bacteria to stimulating collagen production and reducing inflammation. LED light therapy offers a versatile and gentle solution for improving skin texture, diminishing fine lines and wrinkles, and achieving a healthy, radiant complexion.

Red light therapy masks for at-home use have grown in popularity as they offer more than topical skincare products, without spending thousands on in-clinic treatments. LED light therapy is also a very versatile treatment and targets a broad range of skin concerns, such as acne, anti-aging, redness, hyperpigmentation, and more. Many topical skincare products target a single skin concern, leaving many of us feeling both overwhelmed by the choice and approach to our skincare routines. With LED light therapy masks, one device addresses a broad range of skin concerns, making it a holistic approach to skincare, allowing us to relinquish the 10-step skincare routine, in search of something simpler.

The Quality of The Device

It's probably no surprise that $50 LED masks, which lack data on wavelengths and device irradiance, aren't comparable to those from reputable brands backed by solid credentials and reliable statistics. However, spending more on an LED device doesn't automatically guarantee better results. To make an informed choice, check out our post here for key factors to look for in an LED device. Once you understand the essentials, compare devices that meet these criteria. Be sure to purchase from a brand with positive customer reviews, strong evidence of results, and support from estheticians, dermatologists, and other skin experts.

Wavelengths, Wavelengths, Wavelengths

Different wavelengths of light—red, blue, green, and yellow, and infrared—penetrate various layers of the skin, each triggering cellular responses that are known to enhance skin health and appearance. Each wavelength has what is called a therapeutic window - the specific range of light wavelengths that are most effective for producing beneficial biological effects in the skin and underlying tissues. The therapeutic window for red light is 630-660nm, as these wavelengths are known to penetrate sufficiently to boost collagen production. Blue light (415-460nm) is highly effective for eliminating acne-causing bacteria, while near-infrared light (850nm) is best for stimulating advanced collagen production, deeper tissue repair, accelerated wound healing,a nd pain relief. Some lower-quality devices may use wavelengths outside of this therapeutic range, so it's important to check the specific wavelengths they use instead of just relying on general terms like 'red light' or 'infrared light.'

Red
630/633 and 660 for anti-aging
650nm for hair growth

Infrared
850nm

Deep infrared
1072nm

Blue
415 or 460nm

Your LED Light Therapy Routine

It’s not enough to mindlessly wear your LED light therapy mask whenever you remember; creating a robust and workable routine that fits within your schedule is important.

  • Adhere to recommended treatment times, which can range from 3-20 minutes. Adhering to treatment times ensures you receive the optimal light dose to achieve desired results. Somoe devices such as LumaLux Face LED mask take 3 minutes, as it delivers the optimal light dose needed within this time frame, other devices take 10, 15 or 20 for example.
  • Use on clean, dry face, after cleansing, ensure face is fully dry and clear of any serums or lotions. This ensures the light wavelengths penetrate the skin effectively. Apply your AM/PM skincare routine after your LED treatment to accelerate skin healing and boost results. We recommend a hyaluronic acid serum to lock in moisture.

Use the Correct Modes for Your Skin Type

Some LED devices, such as LumaLux Face and Face+ have up to 8 treatment modes, each mode has a unique and targeted treatment for specific skin concerns. As every skin type is unique, combining these treatment modes effectively is key to achieving the best results. Below is a good treatment plan based on your specific skin concerns.

Anti-Aging: Deep Rejuvenation Mode + Intense Youth Boost Mode
Acne: Blemish Control Mode + Intense Youth Boost Mode + Clear and Calm Mode
Hyperpigmentation: Balance and Brighten Mode + Deep Rejuvenation Mode
Scarring: Deep Rejuvenation Mode + Glow Enhancer Mode
Combination skin with no active concerns: Full Spectrum Boost Mode

Consistency is Key

Red light therapy is a cumulative therapy, meaning consistency is key. The more consistent you are, the better the results you will see. It is better to do regular, shorter treatments than trying to pack in 30 minutes of red light therapy at the end of the week to make up for lost sessions, this is not an effective approach to RLT treatment.
